The movements and protests against the United States getting involved in the Vietnam War started incredibly small. Despite the hard war, people still protested and this made it very difficult on the government. However, it did gain popularity in the nation in 1963-1965, after the problem arose about the US starting to bomb North Vietnam and it started attracting a large base of people who decided to support it over the next three years. After the Gulf of Tonkin problem it became very clear that few people would start protesting against the US decision of their military to support South Vietnam. On August 2nd 1964, 3 North Vietnamese torpedo boats were sent in the Gulf of Tonkin. They fired back to defended theirselves, hitting all three torpedo boats. One of the torpedos sank. The US then sailed back to international oceans. On August 3rd, They were told to back into the Gulf of Tonkin and he once again was told that his ship was under attack, once it crossed the line into North Vietnamese oceans. However, later a letter contradicted this act and the result. In the letter, they told people that their men over-reacted about the situation and that it was a crazy weather action, that could have made his men to make this big mistake. This pissed off both countries citizens and therefore, was an increibly hard event to understand and comprehend. The fight was sold to the US citizens as one where a large and wealthy powerful country, the US “had”, would have few problems defeating a Third World country that North Vietnam sold to the US. Some of the US citizens were able to tell this was a war the would be impossible to win, those were the people that protested. The government knew that what happened in South Vietnam could or would happen elsewhere, called the Domino Theory, unless America used their government and military to stop it. Involvement of the US in the Vietnam War was pretty much tooken as a patriotic venture so only a few citizens were ready to protest, until the US started bombing North Vietnam around 1965. Since the US was lying to their people, some people protest to help other beileve that they were lying, but it could not be garrenteed. The protests against the fight started to arose when body bags, of young men, started to come back to America in high numbers. US citizens were problemed that the fight that the US was told the public about was one where victory was definite, but really it was retaking many young lives. America did not only sacrifice their male youth, but the government was putting the death of children, not only in South Vietnam, but also in the North with the bombings that was happening on almost a daily basis. They protested because they wanted to stop something or someone, they believe in something, or because they wanted to protect themselves and others.
