Scientists at The University of Manchester have demonstrated
the potential of a rust-free future. By incorporating graphene with paint, a
truly special graphene coating is formed which could signal the end of the disintegration
of ships and cars through rust.
Rusting occurs when Iron interacts with both oxygen and
water atoms; Graphene-incorporated paint means that it contains the one-atom
thick membrane stated earlier and therefore means that the paint can act as a
barrier for stopping oxygen and water atoms from interacting with the object
that the paint is painted on. Graphene paint is created by combining pure lime-based
paint with Graphene Oxide. Benefits of Graphene paint include resistant against
corrosion, improve thermal regulations of buildings (due to Graphene’s property
of thermal conductivity) and it is a very sustainable and eco-friendly paint (due
to its 98% pure lime base, the paint purifies the surrounding air as it absorbs
As Graphene Paint is already a readily made product, I will analyse
and explore into the topic of “Graphene-based paint on the market”.
UK-based “Applied Graphene Materials” company is working
alongside US-based “Sherwin-Williams” coating and paint manufacturing company,
in an investment to develop graphene-based corrosion-resistant paints. The
companies added that the project could have a size-able impact on corrosion,
which is estimated to cost the UK economy approximately £10 billion each year
in rehabilitation, reconstruction and replacement on equipment used in the
construction, petrochemical and transport economy sectors. AGM (Annual General
Meeting) declared that it is considering adding graphene in different
formulations, one of the formulations they have selected is on the under-water
line parts of ships’ hulls, in an attempt to protect them from corrosion. The
graphene incorporated paint should also enhance lubricity of the hull, which can
improve fuel efficiency due to the theoretically increase in speed of passage
through the water.
