Introduction

In the current scenario, especially in knowledge based society, information is of vital importance especially to pace up with this day by day changing world. In 21st century information seeking behaviour is defined as the different ways by which people search information according to their need and then apply that information in their daily life.

The term was coined by THOMAS D.WILSON in 1981. In 2000, Wilson described behaviour as the totality of human behaviour in relation to available sources and channels of information including both active and passive information seeking and information use. He described information seeking behaviour as purpose seeking of information as a consequence of a need to satisfy some goal.

Information seeking behaviour is a broad term, which involves a set of actions that an individual, such as undergraduates, takes to express information needs, seek information, evaluate and select information and finally uses this information to satisfy his/her information needs (Fatima and Ahmad, 2008). It is therefore described as an individual’s way and manner of gathering and obtaining information for personal use, knowledge, updating and development. In other words, information seeking behaviour involves active or purposeful information as a result of the need to complete course assignment, prepare for class discussions, seminars, workshops, conferences, or write final year research paper.

Kuhlthau (1993) purpose six stage model in the information searching process (ISP) which was explained below

1.        Initiation – beginning the process to search information

2.        Selection – selecting the topic which no relevance in current scenario.

3.        Refocus exploration, reading to know more about topic and making notes to have a greater understanding

4.       For information Formulation- combing the notes and selecting only information while rejecting the other ones

5.       Information collection-searching pertinent information using material like references periodicals nonfiction biographies

6.       Search closure- completing the task at one place and the checking information

Apart from this, there are other models such as:

Statement of the problem

The source of  information  in the library are not fully utilized by the students due to easy access of internet on their desktop, laptop, mobile phones and lack of knowledge as how to utilize these information sources.

Review of literature

1.       Arvind Singh in their research study information seeking behaviour of the teacher of bundelkhand university, Jhansi: An evaluative study ‘suggested that teacher use variety of information sources for teaching and research and also visit some other libraries. Also it is recommended that libraries should take necessary steps to convert non user to regular users. 

2.       Naved ahmed in his research study information seeking behaviour of the student and faculty members in IIMs of Calcutta, lucknow and Ahmadabad:  a survey found that students generally prefer to consult their teachers/supervisors,search on internet & used text books, guide and references books.

 

3.       Faculty members in each IIMs generally use books and journals to supported their teaching and research activities and more than one quarter of them consult with professionals and subject specialist in their respective fields as the primary informal information channel for supplementing their information needs.

 

4.       A .Aruna in her thesis entitled a study on information seeking behaviour among professional students and non professional students suggested that the majority of them utilized the library effectively but mentioned that the library hour needed to be expended. Also updating a new technology in the library is the need of the hour.

 

5.       MD. Tarique answers in his study information seeking behaviour of the students in the faculty of science in university of Delhi:  a survey suggested that to update and generate knowledge of students in various scientific and professional seminars conferences workshopsand exhibitions should be conducted because in science stream along with theory practical exposure is vital.

 

6.       D. Prabhavathi in his study information seeking behaviour of post graduate students of Shri Venkateshwara University, Andhra Pradesh and MonomaniaSundarahar university Tamil Nadu; a study found that there is a need for better orientation about library resources and services and user training workshops especially in using and searching skills for journals abstracting sources, abstracting database and internet to support learning teaching and research.

 

7.       Smt. Sarita Bhattacharya in her thesis entitled ‘information seeking behaviour degree students of general college of barak valley’ concluded that books and journals which arrived at the library should be displayed properly and the list should be sent to the teachers for their information, also better and trained personal in the field of library and information science should be appointed for enduring better services to the users.

 

8.       Shri Data Sanbhaji  :  it bare in his thesis information seeking behaviour of LIS students in Maharashtra, special reference to marathwada region concluded that lesser number of LIS education go forward with the research work.

 

9.       Mr. Faziur, S.A, in his study information seeking behaviour among students in engineering college of Coimbatoreregion: A survey suggested that female student need to be given awareness to make use of the library as the main source of information. Also students should be educated to make use of internet to get right information since it is opted asprimary source of information by female students. There should be convenience atmosphere to attract both male and female students to visit library.

Objectives

1.       To study the purpose of information seeking

2.       To understand the needs of information required by students in colleges

3.       Analyse if information required is in print media or electronic media.

4.       Classifying the hardship faced by students while searching for information.

5.       To ascertain the wide range of sources & study material available in the library to understand the various study requirements.

6.       To analyse the importance of use of technology in the library.

Scope

Scope of this study is based on the information need & information seeking behaviour of female students in Mata Sundri and Zakir Hussain College. The importance of this study is to know the  information need of women’s  who are given less importance as compare to male counterparts in Indian society also to investigate about the  maximum use of text books versus  e-resource.

Sample

It will include a total of 500 students, 250 students from Mata Sundri College and 250 from Zakir Hussain College. The student will be chosen from different fields of study like history honours, political science honours, Hindi honours, Punjabi honours, Psychology honours, etc. This is to analyse the information needs of a wide variety of students.

Hypotheses

1.          Most of the students are seeking information related to their course structure only.

2.          Students mainly refer to text books.

3.          In current scenario, dependence on books is less as compared to e-resources which is available at desktop.

 

Research Methodology

The study employed a survey research method to elicit data about the information needs and information seeking-behaviour of the undergraduates under study. The target population of this study comprises the undergraduates of Political Science (Hons) of Mata Sundri College for Women and Zakir Husian College. An open? and close?ended questionnaire on the information needs and information?seeking behaviour of graduate students will be prepared. The collected data will be analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Limitations

1.       The study is conducted only for the female students to assess their information needs.

2.       A small size of sample is chosen to conduct the study due to time limitation.
