Indianization occurs when any foreign story is
changed into Indian version. Indianization happens when the story or theme of
some foreign language or lends is adopted for film making in Indian languages,
changing the culture, language as it suits Indian culture & audience. It
involves change in language, attire, names, domestication etc. Cultural and
social values are changed in order to make then fit in Indian culture. It
happens so that Indian audiences may feel at home with the borrowed alien
ideas, theme, plot or story, characters are chisled, coined and presented in
Indianized colors. Story is set in Indian conditions. Dialogues are written to
fit into the indianized scenario. Attire is arranged as per the needs of the
story and characters. There is Indianized flavor all around. Thus, when a story
is depicted, presented and picturised in typical Indian flavor it is termed as
Indianization. And of course the Indian masala is also added for which Indian
films are popular.

Adaptation

Adaptation is
potentially as far reaching. Its distinctive feature, the matching of the
cinematic sign system to prior achievement in some other system, can be shown
to be distinctive or all representational cinema.

The term ‘Adaptation’ the cultural model which
the cinema represents is already treasured as a representation in another sign
system. Adaptation is similarly both a leap and a process. It can put into play
the intricate mechanism of its signifiers only in response to a general
understanding of the signified it aspires to have constructed at the end of its
processii.

Literary adaptation is basically
adapting a literary source to another genre such as film, stage play or any
video game etc. Most of the literary works attract a director for its story.
Literature provides the raw material for film to create new visuals forms and
thematic contents.

The many types
of adaptations from Shakespeare come readily to mind. Adaptation hopes to win
an audience by the prestige of its borrowed title or subject. Adaptations from
literature to music, opera or painting are of this nature.iii
Modern film adaptations of Shakespeare will be assessed against a spectrum,
ranging from “tight” adaptations to “moderate” adaptations to “loose”
adaptations.

A tight adaptation is a film that stays true to the performance that
Shakespeare originally intended for stage.

A moderate adaptation is a film
adaptation in which Shakespeare’s words are taken exactly from the text and
transplanted into a new setting that is more modern than Shakespeare’s original.

A loose adaptation is a film adaptation in which
one of Shakespeare’s stories is altered and reworked completely in order to
create a modernized. The style of film can determine the style of teaching that
accompanies it.

ADAPTATIONS IN HINDI CINEMA

Adaptations are not alien to Indian cinema. There
are plenty of literary adaptations in Hindi cinema also. The saga of literary
adaptations in Hindi cinema can be traced as far back as in 136 when Devdas was
adopted. Tight adaptations may still be rather rare but there is no dearth of
loose adaptations in Hindi Cinema. The era of Globalisation has further
intensified the adaptation of foreign works in Hindi cinema.New film makers
come out with adaptations of fiction and Non-fiction works. The list of adapted
movies includes: Guide (1965), Devdas (1936,1955,2002,2009),
Saraswatichandra(1968), Tere Mere Sapne(1971), Umrao Jaan(1981),
Parineeta(1953,2005),The Namesake(2006), 7 KhoonMaaf(2011), Junoon(1978), The
Blue Umbrella(2005), Bride and Prejudice(2004),Sahib
BiwiaurGhulam(1962).Through such list it can be easily comprehended that
adaptations have always been an important part of Hindi cinema and adaptations
always inspire directors to show up their creativity level in more such
Indianized way.
