In 1997 The Verve released ‘Bittersweet
Symphony’, which achieved international success. The lyrics and most of the music
was written by Richard Ashcroft, the bands frontman. However, its most
recognisable part, the strings, were taken from a symphonic recording of “The
Last Time”, which was written by David Whitaker as a tribute to the Rolling
Stones song of the same title.
